The Built-In Desk
{image via Houzz}
I am currently working on a project where the client has decided to demo the linen cabinets of an upstairs hallway and create a built-in desk in it’s place. The space is on the children’s wing of the house and opens up to a loft playroom. I think this is going to be a great use of space! Of course, I had to go searching for inspiration…

Winter White
Funny I stumbled across this article in Chicago Home + Garden, as I was just sporting my winter white coat today! I did a post not too long ago entitled “White After Labor Day,” which featured the season-less elegance of monochromatic, white kitchens. Once again, I want to emphasize that white should not be limited to spring and summer, especially when it comes to home decor.
There is something dreamy and elegant about incorporating a wintry shade of white throughout your home. Softer than stark white yet still very neutral, winter white is extremely versatile. I love creamy colored walls, buttery settees, even white roses will do the trick. What are some of your favorite ways to “beat the winter blah’s” with white as a design element?

Pushing the Limits
One of my assistants said to me the other day, “through decorating my own apartment I realized how much fun it is to push the limits of decorating,” and I couldn’t agree more! While I respect and admire the historic and traditional (I have lived in many historic homes myself and I have a major obsession with antiques, after all!), infusing my projects with a modern flair is central to my design mantra.
One way I love to incorporate contemporary style in my projects is through art. I often find myself juxtaposing the traditional (18th Century Colonial Oil Portraits which I found antiquing in Boston) with some of the most cutting edge artist’s out there today.
Right now, one of the artists who is inspiring me the most is Marilyn Minter. Her provocative, beguiling work left me captivated from first glance. To me, her work is just as much a conversation piece as the 18th century oil portrait hanging in the next room. I have coveted a book of her work that was given to me by one of my intern’s as a gift over a year ago.
To quote a recent blurb from Artinfo…
“If you missed Marilyn Minter’s most recent show at Salon 96 in the Bowery, which closed on December 4, you missed one of the purer pleasures of the fall season. The show featured a few of her large-scaled, hyper-detailed paintings — she hates the term “photorealist,” so we won’t use it — of some of her signature themes: close-ups of women’s mouths and high-heeled shoes, all rendered with her signature atmosphere of dirty glamour.
The real stand-out of the show, however, was the new video work. Minter’s long-time interest in video has been receiving increased attention, since her short clip “Green Pink Caviar” — a closeup of a mouth smearing colored caviar on glass — was unveiled in 2009. The standout new work at Salon 94, “Play Pen” (2011), features toddlers splashing around in a pool of viscous silver liquid, presented in super-slow-motion, so that the dynamics of the goo — and the looks of mixed joy and confusion on their faces as they discover these dynamics — are captured with dream-like emphasis”.
I can’t wait to place a work of Marilyn’s intensely mesmerizing work-it is only a matter of time!

From Runway to Room
Last night I was reading the latest US Weekly, and I came across these six gorgeous Gucci looks in the classic color combo – black, gold, and white. It is such a timeless, elegant look that is perfect for both fashion and interiors!
(The middle is my personal favorite!)

The Most Private Room in the House….
Upper Pacific Suite- Post Ranch Inn, Big Sur, CA
May be the most beautiful! Well, at these hotels at least….. the bathrooms give the rooms themselves a run for their money. Ranging from sanctuary like retreats to provocative, funky spaces, these bathrooms are truly sights to be see in and of themselves. You will pay a premium for a “deluxe” bathroom (or more like bath suite)…the Presidential Suite at the Mandarin Oriental in New York will set you back $18,000 a night! Tempting…that does look like a very nice tub…

Lighting should never be underestimated!
A “hot off the press” design project of mine on the North Shore of Chicago. Custom MS fixture in foyer!
Sitting in the pop-up showroom of furniture and lighting designer Marjorie Skouras at High Point Market was thrilling and fulfilling. A treasured friend of mine as well as the mastermind of a gorgeous new line for Currey and Co, I have used the work of Marjorie many times in my own design projects. It is because of my shopping and placing her works-from lighting to all sorts of gorgeous accessories into my projects that we became friends. I loved our last brunch in LA with my assistant, Amy, and dear Bruno and India.
Our friendship led to my showroom being the source for all things “Marjorie” as her midwestern rep. Nate Berkus Associates have become one of our most recent new client’s for that “Marjorie” style. Her famed beaded chandeliers are to die for as well as her inventive and unique furniture. We have both on display in my Buckingham ID Showroom here in Chicago.
Check out some of my favorite pieces from Marjorie’s collection as well as the use of her work in several of my projects.

Lately I have been noticing a lot of peacocks in interior design – everything from artwork to accessories! It may be a classic motif, but it certainly has made a resurgence. Take a look!

Blog Share: The work of Sketch42
{photo via Sketch42}
Early on Thursday morning I saw a tweet go past with a link to a recent blog post by Nicole Cohen of the blog Sketch42. The tweet said “Keith Haring inspired” and I was instantly drawn – and once I took a look at Nicole’s post I was instantly in love! She had created an entry with Keith Haring inspired graphics painted (by her!) on the walls. Considering I’ve been a huge fan and collector of Keith Haring since my teens, I was by far impressed with this stunning entry!

Nicole wrote that she was also inspired by the work of Kelly Wearstler’s entry at her Hillcrest Estate.

Makes for such a dramatic backdrop when styling! Loving this!
I actually featured this on a blog post awhile back about my visit to the Keith Haring Foundation in NYC (photo by me).

High Point Highlights
I just returned from an amazing few days at High Point Market in North Carolina! I was invited to attend and tour the Lexington Home Brands headquarters (more on that in an upcoming post). But first wanted to share some highlights of the past few days’ events and experiences!
Had the best time ever hanging out with these fabulous bloggers: (l-r) Christian of Maison21, Julieann of Create Girl, me, Cassandra of Coco + Kelly, Ashlina of The Decorista, Crystal of Plush Palate & Rue Magazine, and Katie of The Neo Traditionalist & Matchbook Magazine.
On the very first evening upon arriving at High Point, we were invited to meet Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer (Princess Diana’s brother) at the Theodore Alexander showroom.
The Althrop Collection features over 500 years of English tradition and heritage.
Theodore Alexander hosts the opening of the new Althorp Living History Showroom at High Point.
On Day 2, we went over to the IHFC (International Home Furnishings Center) to check out the Elite Leather Company space.

Urban Chic
I wish that it was every day that I had the chance to work on a Michigan Avenue project-right in the thick of things. Add to that description a swank apartment project in the city. Many of my clients live in single family homes, but when I was presented with the opportunity to work on a pad in a posh Gold Coast high-rise (one of Chicago’s most beautiful neighborhoods) I immediately said “Heck yes!”
This was such a great project for me in that the client also shared an appreciation for art, antiques and artifacts- the 3 A’s which I live by. In a smaller space like an apartment, every square foot must count. No detail was overlooked, however I had to be careful not to “over decorate” the home. No matter what objects or artifacts I put in the space, the finest piece of art will always be the phenomenal views of my beautiful city
It doesn’t matter that my phone doesn’t work here….kinda like a work oasis when I am here.

1stdibs Finds
{Op Art Tables by Anne Herbst}
I wish I could consider Sunday a day of rest, but in this line of work, it is a 24/7 operation. Even when I am “relaxing” at home, I am still glued to my computer combing the vast sea of internet based interior design for inspiration, furniture and accessories. Sitting down at home (albeit in front of my computer) is as close as I get to truly “taking the day to rest.” Sigh…
On the flip side, I truly do love searching high and low for the absolute perfect, special “somethings” to present to my clients and use in my projects.
This afternoon took me to 1stdibs, a favorite online marketplace of all sorts of extremely high-end goods- from furniture to fine art to vintage clothing. If your budget allows, it is an excellent place to find one-of-a-kind, fabulous pieces that really have that “wow” factor. I was approached by Michael Bruno to exhibit my wares when he first began -and now, I have inquired and am waiting patiently for his response. I think that he may have forgotten about me- but I am still VERY interested :0
Check out my latest finds…ironic it was my “resting” day when thousands of others were running 26.2 miles in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon!

Back from Summer Vacation!
Hope everyone is enjoying their “end of summer” weekend and had a great summer! I can’t believe it’s already September! I spent the month of August on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, CA where my family lives and my dad keeps his boat. I actually lived on the boat for the month and it was a really nice change of pace. Thought I would share some highlights from my summer vacation.
The boat is docked quite literally just steps from the beach, as seen here from the aft of the boat. The homes are on the Beacon Bay waterfront side of Balboa Island.
How cute is my nephew Eli hanging out on the boat!
Paddling on the bay is very popular, many canoes, paddlers would go by daily…
…some with their dog too!
But I actually spent my summer days working…
…and here too.
But the reality is, most days were actually spent hard at work here.
But EVERY day at the *office* was finished with an amazing sunset like this one!
Or this one!
Mornings started early, where the water was like glass and it was peacefully quiet.
My sleeping quarters were not the “captain’s quarters,” instead I opted for a modest “cabin.”
And the most compact bathroom I ever got ready in each and every day. (Although it’s not every day you see a seal swim by from the “head!”)
The galley style kitchen located on the lowest level of the boat.
When I did venture off the boat, my favorite thing to do is take the Ferry from Balboa Island across the bay to the Balboa Peninsula side. The Ferry is just $1 per person each way, it crosses the bay continuously from early morning until late at night and carries both cars and passengers.
Passing by one ferry from another (there are two that go back and forth).
My favorite place to go is Newport Landing Restaurant, they have the best happy hour too!
The view from the second story patio at Newport Landing.
Coming back on the ferry at night, a view of the Fun Zone and Balboa Pavilion.
Our boat is docked just steps away from Marine Avenue on Balboa Island, the one main street lined with shops and restaurants. I walked it daily but unfortunately didn’t have time to explore some of the home decor shops, like this one (and others that I’d like to eventually feature on the blog).
I mostly walked through town to get to Little Balboa Island (where our house is) passing by the homes on the canal side…
…and over a bridge.
I’ve since said “goodbye” to my “summer office” – and am now back home!
Until next summer!

HGTV Home & Shaw Floors Event
Last week, I attended an event to experience a new line of flooring from Shaw Floors for HGTV Home, a partnership known as HGTV Home Flooring by Shaw Floors. The event took place in North Carolina, starting with a kick-off dinner at the Biltmore in Asheville, NC. Part of the three day event was to partner with another blogger to create a room design challenge featuring two products from the HGTV Home by Shaw Floors collection. Prior to dinner, we gathered for cocktail hour where we got a chance to browse the collection and choose our flooring. I was selected to partner with Pam from the blog Retro Renovation. (Pam and I had previously met before, so it was fun to team up together for this event – as well as hone in on our mutual admiration for modern and contemporary design.)
We started first with selecting our area rug from the HGTV Home Area Rugs collection, a line that features over 120 area rugs which includes everything from traditional and transitional to contemporary . Pam and I gravitated toward one of the more modern rugs called Mod Links.
The area rug we choose for our design challenge room, Mod Links in Beige (which also comes in Black and Dark Brown).
Next, we selected a hardwood flooring that would be installed wall to wall in our mock up room design. While the Shaw Floors line of hardwood floors has an amazing assortment of hardwoods, many of them rustic and distressed, in various colors, we opted for a more sleek darker wood species to work in our room.
Also, included in the collection is a line of carpet in various colors, patterns, and textures.
Once we finalized our decisions, we placed our “order” with a Shaw representative who immediately called the order in to Shaw Headquarters in Dalton, GA. The amazing thing is that the entire order (along with the selections of the other teams, five in total) was to be shipped out and driven across the state to Greensboro, NC and installed in our rooms (five “bays”) by early the next morning when we arrived at Tribuzio-Hilliard, the studio location and furnishing warehouse we used to create our room design.
On Day 2, we arrived by late morning to the Tribuzio-Hilliard studio where we got a brief tour and were greeted (much to our surprise!) by Lisa LaPorta from HGTV’s Designed to Sell.
Once we got to see our rooms in person (complete with the fast track overnight installation of our flooring selections!) we were let loose to run around the Tribuzio-Hilliard warehouse to “grab” what we could of their huge assortment of furniture, lighting, and accessories. Here’s my team partner Pam from Retro Renovation along with our assigned designer Dawn from (who knew just where to find what we were looking for!) – as they scout for side chairs at the very top of the racks.
We quickly nabbed a green sofa, leopard side chair, and a round retro looking coffee table to fit into the scheme of our room design – which was going in the direction of a mod retro glam look to tie in with our Mod Links area rug. With a little extra assistance, Ashley from Empower Media Marketing holds up artwork for Pam and I to decide on.
On the second day of the two day room design challenge (essentially the 8th hour), our room was finally taking shape. Overnight, it had been painted, window treatments (custom!) had been installed, we had cushions “upholstered” for our window seats, and a fly wall brought in to create a fireplace complete with a painted mantle and hearth (which was painted brown to tie in with the ceiling trim) – a touch we added to correlate with the brown “links” in the Mod Links area rug. We spent the final hour hastily accessorizing our room (and making a few last minute decisions!)…
And here it is: the completed room!
Detail of our fireplace vignette.
Detail of the leopard chair on the Mod Links area rug with a makeshift bar in the background.
Of course, we had much competition with the four other teams who all created amazing rooms! Starting in September, the rooms will be featured on Shaw Floors Facebook page and readers will have a chance to vote on their favorites rooms along with some exciting giveaways daily. Stay tuned as I am planning to feature more about the event, the other rooms, the giveaways, and the info on how and where to vote!
{Many thanks to Shaw Floors & Empower Media Marketing for inviting me to experience the new line from HGTV Home up close and personal. As I’ve mentioned before, being apart of Shaw Floors means a great deal to me having grown up in the carpet industry.}
{And I had a blast teaming up with Pam of Retro Renovation – could not have asked for a better partner!}
